Plastic surgery is a dynamic field, with new products, techniques and innovations constantly broadening the boundaries of what is possible.
There is a constant interplay between emerging technologies and consumer preferences: As procedures are perfected, new interest is generated among prospective patients, and surprising trends may take shape. One new product can change tastes, styles and preferences almost overnight. A great example of this is the dermal filler revolution, which has made facial enhancement more convenient, effective and exciting than ever before.
Here, Southeastern Michigan plastic surgeon Dr. Mune Gowda surveys the plastic surgery landscape, highlighting key trends that gained momentum in 2020.
Plastic Surgery’s Image
According to a survey conducted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) in May of last year, interest in the benefits of plastic surgery has grown tremendously in a very short period of time. Almost half of Americans who had never tried a cosmetic procedure were open to doing so in the coming months.
Data also indicate that when an individual does undergo a procedure, he or she is much more likely to visit the plastic surgeon again for surgical or noninvasive treatment. Once patients experience the convenience and incredible range of benefits, apparently they want more, according to the ASPS survey.
Trends in Contouring
Patients are not intensely focused solely on facial rejuvenation. In fact, body contouring surgical options showed a large one-year increase, representing six of the ten most popular procedures. In 2019 breast augmentation was the most sought-after surgery, according to the ASPS, followed by liposuction, eyelid surgeries such as blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty, facelift, tummy tuck, breast lift, dermabrasion, neck lift and breast reduction. With 299,715 surgeries, breast augmentation was performed six times more frequently than breast reduction.
Choosing Injectables
Looking at the trend lines, few observers were surprised to see that dermal fillers maintained their hold on the popular imagination, increasing to 2.72 million procedures in the U.S. in 2019. But the enduring popularity of Botox is a surprise for many: 7.69 million Botox procedures were performed that year, the most ever.
Many adults are turning to dermal fillers as a first step in the rejuvenation process. Rather than choosing brow lift, blepharoplasty, facelift or rhinoplasty, many are testing the waters with injectables first, hoping to achieve similar results without the complications and inconvenience of surgery.
