How Lasers Can Rejuvenate Your Skin

Laser Treatment for Facial Rejuvenation

Laser treatment is an effective solution to a variety of skin problems. Whether it’s scarring, age spots or fine lines, laser treatment can eliminate or diminish it. Southeastern Michigan plastic surgeon Dr. Mune Gowda discusses how laser therapy rejuvenates skin, making patients appear radiant and younger.

Laser Treatments

Laser skin rejuvenation therapies involve either ablative or non-ablative lasers. Ablative lasers work by wounding the skin. The new skin emerging after treatment is tighter and smoother. Depending on the size of the treatment area, ablative laser therapy will take between 30 minutes and two hours.

Non-ablative laser treatment does not wound the skin. Instead, it stimulates the production of collagen. The body’s most abundant protein, collagen keeps skin plump and firm. As we age, less collagen is produced. The result is sagging and wrinkling. Stimulation of collagen improves skin texture and tone, but the process is gradual. Non-ablative treatment is recommended for rejuvenating skin texture and addressing hyperpigmentation. Ablative therapy proves best for wrinkle reduction.

Several non-ablative laser treatment sessions, spaced over a period of a few months, are usually required.

Resurfacing

In ablative laser treatment, the laser focuses an intense light beam on the treatment area, destroying the skin’s outer layer. The treatment also heats the skin’s underlying layer. This boosts collagen fiber growth.

What Lasers Can Do

Laser therapy can eradicate or lessen the appearance of:

  • Acne scars
  • Age spots
  • Sun damage
  • Wrinkles
  • Uneven skin tone

Contraindications

While laser surgery is generally safe, not everyone is a candidate. Pregnant or nursing women should avoid laser therapy. Those with active cold sores must postpone sessions. Patients with compromised immune systems must discuss their condition with the doctor before undergoing the procedures.

Recovery and Results

Expect ablative laser healing to take between two and three weeks. Results are not immediate. Skin may look somewhat red for a while. Once healing is complete, the difference becomes apparent. Even better, the results may last for years.

Swelling, itching and redness are common temporary side effects with both ablative and non-ablative laser therapy.

Non-ablative laser therapy takes less time to heal. Patients can resume normal activities right away. However, it is not as effective as ablative laser treatment.

After laser surgery, avoid sun exposure as much as possible. Always use a sunscreen with a Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 or more.
