Dermal lip fillers are an excellent choice for plumping up lips, but there are even more alternatives for lip enhancement. Southeastern Michigan plastic surgeon Dr. Mune Gowda discusses several options to make your lips more beautiful.
Lip Fillers
Injectable lip fillers enhance your lips by making them appear full. You can choose just how much volume you want. The procedure takes place in the office, taking approximately 30 minutes to complete. Many people arrange appointments on their lunch breaks.
All of the best-known fillers, including Juvederm, Restylane and Voluma, contain hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in skin. Not only do these fillers have good results, but allergic reactions are rare. More good news — if you decide you want less volume after living with your enhanced lips for a while, an enzyme injection quickly and safely dissolves the hyaluronic acid.
After the injections, your lips may swell slightly for a day or so. Placing a cold pack on them will relieve minor swelling more rapidly.
The right lip filler for your purposes depends on the look you want to achieve. Some people want especially voluminous lips, while others prefer just a little more fullness. Based on the type of filler chosen, expect the results to last between six months and one year.
Lip Implants
The primary downside to lip fillers is that you will need regular maintenance injections. Those looking for a longer-term alternative might consider a lip implant. A lip implant may consist of fat or tissue taken from the patient’s own body, or silicone or expanded polytetrafluoroethylene versions.
Candidates for this procedure must have sufficient tissue on the lips to disguise the implant. It is best used on those whose lips are fairly symmetrical. The surgery itself takes about 30 minutes, and recovery takes just a few days.
Upper Lip Lift Surgery
Upper lip lift is another permanent solution for keeping your lips full. This cosmetic surgery shortens the area between the nose and upper lip by removing a small piece of skin beneath the nostrils. Afterward, the upper lip appears enhanced, and the lips overall are better defined. Expect to take about six weeks to heal completely post-surgery.
