Combating Sun Damage: Skin Rejuvenation Treatments

Skin Rejuvenation in Novi & Troy, Michigan

Sun damage extends beyond hyperpigmentation, or sun spots. Freckles and wrinkles may also result from too much sun. Top Michigan plastic surgeon Dr. Mune Gowda discusses ways to combat skin damage caused by excessive sun exposure.

Laser Treatments

Laser treatments can eradicate sun spots and freckles, as well as minimize wrinkles. A CO2 laser can eradicate wrinkles and improve the appearance of various types of blemishes, including sun damage.

A HALO laser can target the correct treatment depth better than older forms of lasers. This reduces the number of visits required to achieve the desired results. Other laser treatments are available based on minimal downtime for busy patients. Our practice specializes in combination laser therapy for maximum effectiveness.

No matter the type of laser chosen, sun spots, wrinkles and other sun-related damage are eliminated or made much less noticeable.

Chemical Peels

By removing the old skin’s outer layer, chemical peels can improve sun-damaged skin. Underneath that old layer is new, smoother skin. Peels work well not on the only face, but also on the neck and hands.

The depth of the chemical peel depends on patient goals. After determining the right kind of chemical peel for your needs, the doctor cleans the affected area thoroughly and then applies the solution. You may experience a slight burning sensation. Bandages are then placed over the treatment area.

Expect some swelling and redness for several days. Those undergoing medium or deep peels should find that skin blisters will fall off within one to two weeks, revealing fresh new skin.

Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion uses a special device to exfoliate the skin. The exfoliation removes more damaged skin, leaving healthier, new skin behind.

It is a good choice for those with minor to moderate sun damage. It is especially useful for people whose skin has become discolored due to sun exposure. With microdermabrasion, there is little downtime.

Protect Your Skin

Protect your skin from sun damage by avoiding sun exposure during the heat of the day. Wear sunscreen year-round, but use a higher SPF in warm weather. When outdoors, wear sunglasses, wide-brimmed hats and sun-protective clothing.

There are many topical products available to protect skin from damaging ultraviolet rays. The doctor will recommend the best items for your unique needs.
