Age Spot Treatments That Really Work

Signs of Aging for Laser Treatment

Age spots are even more revealing than wrinkles. Perhaps you tried some home remedies for age spot removal, only to discover they were a waste of time. Fortunately, there are several age spot treatments that really work. Southeastern Michigan plastic surgeon Dr. Mune Gowda discusses treatments that really eliminate age spots.

Age Spots

Also known as liver spots, age spots are small, dark areas that generally appear on sun-exposed skin. Not only are they unsightly, but their name is synonymous with getting older. For instance, age spots on the hands can give away a person’s age, even if their faces appear more youthful.

Age spots usually show up after age 50. However, people who have spent a great deal of time in the sun might develop age spots in their 30s. The areas most prone to age spots correspond with those receiving the most sun exposure. These include the:

  • Back
  • Face
  • Feet
  • Hands
  • Shoulders

Topical Remedies

Topical remedies, both over-the-counter and prescription, may fade age spots. However, these treatments may take months to show results.

Laser Therapy

There are two primary types of laser therapy used to eliminate age spots. Ablative laser therapy, also known as wound therapy, destroys the top layer of skin. When healed, the age spots are diminished.

Other lasers can get rid of melanocytes, the melanin-producing cells, without causing skin damage.

Most laser therapy treatments require two or three sessions.

Chemical Peel

A chemical peel involves applying a topical treatment solution to the affected area. This solution removes the top layers of the skin. As it heals, new skin without pigmentation takes its place. Patients may need several sessions to achieve results.

Dermabrasion

With dermabrasion, the age spots are sanded off via a rotating brush. As the skin heals, the area appears smoother. Multiple sessions may prove necessary.

Aftercare

The treated areas are bandaged after non-topical therapy. The doctor gives instructions on cleansing the area and using medicated ointments. The skin will start sloughing off within five to seven days. Expect some swelling or stinging for a few days post-treatment.

No matter the treatment, patients must avoid the sun for several months. Wear sunscreen when outdoors and wear protective clothing. Use only oil-free makeup for several months if the age spots were on the face.
