3 Things to Look For in Before-and-After Photos

Plastic Surgery Before and After Photos

Doing research prior to plastic surgery is critical. Before-and-after photographs show evidence of the plastic surgeon’s skill and artistry. Knowing key points to check out will help you find the right surgeon for your needs. Southeastern Michigan plastic surgeon Dr. Mune Gowda discusses what to look for in before-and-after shots.

1. Similarity to You

Seek out “before” photos that resemble you somewhat. That way, you can get a better idea of your potential results. The photos should be of people who are part of your age group. Search for someone of the same ethnic background and size. For instance, if you have a small frame, examine photos of patients who also have small frames. This is especially crucial for procedures such as breast augmentation.

2. Consistency

Look for consistency in the way the before and after photos are lit, and the way the patients are posed. Uniform camera settings and distance between patient and photographer present a realistic portrait.

Besides the frontal and two profile views, each example should include two oblique views. These photos show the patient in ¾ profile looking left and right.

When a before is different from the after pose, it is likely the after picture was taken that way for a reason. Perhaps a photo in the original pose is not that flattering. Maybe a scar is apparent if taken from the initial angle. The same holds true for lighting. A change in lighting can make the after photo appear better than the results indicate.

3. No Cookie Cutter Results

Do the “after” photos tend to look a lot alike? You want a plastic surgeon whose work complements each patient’s face, rather than someone who is good at achieving a certain look that doesn’t vary much between patients. Now, if that particular result is what you want, that’s fine.

Do the results look natural, or is it easy to tell the patient had work done? Plastic surgery improves your appearance, but it should not look artificial.

Assess the images carefully. Are any scars visible? Is there symmetry? You should feel comfortable with the plastic surgeon’s “portfolio.” Surgery involves scars, but a skilled plastic surgeon minimizes their appearance by placing incisions where hair or natural folds hide them.
